Forklift Rental Guide: Types, Fuel and Operator Training
Forklifts are rented for warehouse peaks, construction deliveries and moves.
Pick the type
- Cushion-tire forklifts are generally for smooth indoor floors.
- Pneumatic-tire and rough-terrain forklifts are for outdoor yards and job sites.
- Telehandlers add a telescoping boom for reach and height on construction sites.
Capacity and height
Know your heaviest load and how high it must go. Rated capacity typically decreases as the load is raised or moved farther from the mast, so share load size and lift height with the yard.
Fuel
Electric models produce no exhaust at the point of use and are common indoors; propane and diesel models are common outdoors. Ask about charging or fuel cylinder exchange.
Operator training
Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l), employers must ensure each powered industrial truck operator is trained and evaluated before operating one, and must certify that training. Rental yards may offer familiarization but the employer remains responsible.
