12 Questions to Ask an Equipment Rental Yard Before You Book

Listings on this site are unverified, so a short phone call is the best way to confirm a yard has the machine you need. Use these questions.

  1. Do you have the exact machine (make, size class) available for my dates?
  2. How are rates structured – by day, week, month, or by engine hours – and what counts as a day?
  3. Is there a minimum rental period?
  4. What does delivery and pickup cost, and what time windows do you offer?
  5. Is a trailer included if I tow it myself? What hitch and tow rating do I need?
  6. Which attachments come with it, and which cost extra?
  7. Do you offer a damage waiver, and what does it not cover?
  8. What insurance or certificate of insurance do you require?
  9. What ID, deposit or credit check is required?
  10. What is the fuel or charging policy on return?
  11. Will someone walk me through operation at pickup or delivery?
  12. What happens if the machine breaks down during my rental?

Write the answers down and get the final terms in the rental agreement before you sign.
