Before an excavation rental: check the state's actual 811 rules
Research checked November 5, 2026 (Pacific Time). Two state examples, not a complete nationwide compliance guide.
PHMSA recommends contacting 811 before digging and following applicable state safe-digging requirements. Do not invent a single national waiting period or treat a machine reservation as permission to dig.
California construction-safety example
California's 8 CCR 1541(b) addresses determining subsurface installations before excavation, notice to notification centers and known nonmember owners at least two working days before digging (with a stated emergency exception), marking the excavation area and obtaining the specified positive responses. Additional provisions address high-priority installations and other hazards. This is a narrow summary of the construction-safety rule, not the whole Government Code 4216 regime or every homeowner situation.

Florida statutory example
The 2026 Florida Statutes 556.105 requires notice at least two full business days before covered land excavation/demolition and ten full business days before covered underwater work. Notification receipt timing, response verification, marking conditions and exceptions also matter. Reading only the number of days is not enough.

The remaining states need individually sourced notice windows, ticket life, response obligations, tolerance zones and exemption notes. Unknown fields remain blank until official sources are checked.
